New Jersey may abolish several discriminating and sexist laws that have demeaning references to women that date back to the 19th century.

According to the Associated Press, one of antiquated laws require a 72 hour waiting period for a marriage unless the man was arrested for “bastardy, rape, fornication or of having had carnal knowledge of an unmarried female.”   Another law says a woman must give up her property rights to her husband if she’s been “ravished,” unless the husband forgives her and allows her to live with him.
